Home Router Warning!

With the rapid deployment of Work From Home (WFH), security was not the first priority. To protect yourself and your company, now is the time to bring security to the forefront.  

Recently a German company carried out a study involving 127 home routers and the results were appalling!  

Most did not have updates to the bios and were running Linux based operating systems that was years old. This may not mean much to you but consider, without updates, there are security holes. 

In fact the German study found 46 routers, covering many different brands, had not seen a single security update within the last year, leaving them open to hundreds of known vulnerabilities. Many of the routers were using a version of the Linux operating system that has not been in use or updated in several years.  

HERE is a link to the study if you want to read for yourself, but, suffice it to say, this is a big problem for WFH users and the security of your company's data.  

What is a business to do?  

  1. Have your IT company check that the WFH user is using a router and not just the modem provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). If they have a router, update it if possible. 
  2. If an update is not possible or available or the WFH user does not have a router in place after the ISP modem, it may be best for you and your company to replace or put in place a good, secure router. These routers are not necessarily expensive. Many IT providers will lease them to you and cover them under your contract so that they are monitored and updated appropriately.  
  3. Also make sure the security stack that your IT provider uses at your office is in place at your employees' WFH setup, whether that be their own personal computer or a work issued system.  

Remember, this WFH environment may be temporary, but the hackers are hard at work trying to get your company's data. Make sure you are protected as much as possible. As many companies are now looking to continue WFH policies, even after the pandemic, the better you setup your systems and security the more prepared you will be for the future work environment.
