Back to School?

Your employees (and perhaps you) are preparing for your kids to go back to school. You may be asking why this would concern your business IT. Well, here is the thing. We learned a lot during COVID, many people went to Work from Home environments and a lot of them never came back to the office or came back part time. They also started using their home computers for business. This is a much bigger issue than you may know.

Home computers are great for doing your shopping, paying your bills, the kids playing online games, and doing their homework, but all of these things come with risk, and home computers are an easy point of entry for hackers. Most home computers may have only basic antivirus software (usually free ones or ones that came with the computer) if they have even that. Your business environment is far too important for you to trust it to Jimmy’s home gaming and school computer!

You may say, yeah, but we use a VPN. Great, that is good, but if that home computer has been compromised, one of the easiest things to do is put a keylogger on it. Keyloggers record all your keystrokes including usernames and passwords. Once a hacker has that information, it is only a matter of time before they gain access to your business systems. And yes, MFA is a deterrent here, but with access to that home computer, and no software to detect the hackers presence, there are ways around that as well.

Ever since COVID we have been working with our clients to only let business happen on business computers. Then we can fully protect them with all our security stack as well as help them when they have issues at home. With a home computer, we have no access to be able to assist if they have problems.

So let Jimmy go back to school and use that home computer for his homework, just make sure your employees use your business computers for theirs!

As always, if you have questions or concerns please contact us, we would be glad to help!
